Case Studies

Case 1 - Investor Poll

I know how to unearth story angles to get earned-media results. I did this extensively when I worked with a large bank for seven years at Telegraph, LLC, most notably when I promoted its investor poll.

The investor poll focuses on the opinions of very wealthy individuals. I went through the poll's data and found that most high-net-worth investors over 55 do not use financial technology tools. They don't have password protection software, money management apps, or credit score-checking capability. I realized this was probably because of ageism, as most developers creating the tools are young.

To make my point, I wrote an op-ed for a Silicon Valley publication about why it wasn't brilliant for fintech companies to ignore older investors. I used the poll data and additional research to back up my claims. I also credited the op-ed to a 67-year-old financial advisor with experience working in Silicon Valley, as he had more authority than I did.

The piece drew great attention. I successfully pitched the op-ed to VentureBeat, a publication with eight million monthly readers. A San Francisco Business Times reporter wrote an article about the op-ed. An ageism expert with hundreds of thousands of followers retweeted it. And I leveraged the article’s attention to secure a radio interview with the listed author.

Case 2 - Resort lets job seekers try out roles using virtual reality

While working for a technology PR firm, I promoted a virtual reality company's partnership with a large resort chain. The resort decided to use my client's technology to train its new employees and give potential employees an idea of life on the job. My colleagues and I initially highlighted the straight training story in our pitching, but I felt the more compelling story related to the job previewing. I also thought we could tie the job previewing to the Great Resignation story that was popular then. My story angle won out, and the below Business Insider story was rewritten multiple times by multiple publications.

Case 3 - Why Preschool Teachers Deserve Shots First

During the height of the pandemic, I worked with a preschool group to advocate for teachers to be among the first to get COVID-19 vaccine shots. In my media pitching, I highlighted that the preschool teachers were at high risk of getting the Coronavirus because they had to work with young children closely.
